I have been trying to quit my social media addiction for ages. In fact I am a very persistent kind of person if I set my mind to do something it never fails.
However, it just doesn’t seem to work when it comes to my addiction to phone and social media.
In the past I always spent at least 2 hours everyday on social media. sometimes more. During lockdown my eyes got very tired staring at screen for work and for social event but even after that I would still be spending a lot of time on my phone.
If you are like me, you will know it’s just so hard to resist the feeling of scrolling down. And when you are off for a few minutes, you suddenly think of something then you pick up your phone again. No matter how many times I try to make myself stop, it just never works.
Now I finally get rid of this phone addiction. I really want to share with you how.
It all comes back to the inspiration from Eckhardt Toile’s ‘power of now’ that I talked about a few days ago.
I am now becoming very present in every circumstances. When I go for a early morning walk, I look at the sky, the tree, the people. If my thought of the past or future comes up, I notice it and let it go.
I only do one thing at a time and be very present to it. When I cook, I don’t listen to music. I just focus on cooking. When I eat, I don’t check my phone or do anything else, I just stay present and focus on the food. If you start to do such simple step, one thing at a time, you will notice the noise in your head is slowly diminishing.
You will also feel a lot calmer and grounded. A true sense of contentment within you will emerge. It might look no difference for people from the outside to see, but from the inside you will notice the shift and everything seems to be very different.
I don’t have the urge to touch my phone anymore.
When I am with friends or when I am teaching, I am a lot more present and the quality of interaction is at its peak. I fall asleep much quicker and my brain and mind just seems to be a lot clearer. You really can feel a sense of joy within.
The most interesting thing is, you are getting more things done with greater efficiently but at the same time feeling very controlled and calm.
It doesn’t mean that we don’t have a plan or goal to work towards to anymore. On the contrary, you will be able to handle the plan and goal much better when you are in this present state of consciousness.
It’s very hard to describe the feeling. Just like what Oprah Winfrey said,
‘ it can transform your thinking….the result? More joy, right now”
It’s very true. I can’t believe growing in the present power, such easy little thing can make such change in my life.
